Dear Educators,
This has been quite a year. I started out strong on this vocabulary endeavor, and then 'petered' out as we approached state testing. Well, as I always say, I learn more than my students every year...sigh! Going from kindergarten to fifth grade was quite a shock. The stamina needed in 5th grade is significantly LESS than in kindergarten, but the learning curve made it challenging. *** See more after the WORDS. The following is practice for next year. I would like this to be valuable for my students, and hopefully, yours, so please share suggestions! |
***Our MAP test story:
One of my students raised her hand during the second MAP test and said, "Mrs. Hoerr, I have no idea what this word is..."
The word was somnambulate...say, what? In retrospect (another word that my 5th graders had), I realized the importance of teaching an exhaustive number of root words! Did I consider -somn (sleep) or -ambul (walk) essential roots for them? (no...bad on me!)
Live and learn!
So teach me and help me learn. I will research and try to give you something beneficial, if you tell me what you need/want from a website to support vocabulary instruction.
